You might be a little intimidated to hear the word, "exfoliation", and that's totally okay! But we're here to break it down for you, and let you know that it is 100% safe (when done correctly) and can be the solution to many skin woes, especially in the cold winter temps. Really, exfoliation is the process of refining the outermost layer of the skin, and facilitating the rejuvenation of the cells — which is a natural process. When that top layer of the skin isn't removed, the result can be a dull complexion and less efficacy of your skin-care products and water (= hydration) into the skin.
There are two basic ways to exfoliate: physical (face brushes and scrubs) and chemical (using products with glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid). Both will gently remove dead skin cells from your face, but it's very important to not over do it, especially if you're just incorporating it into your routine for the first time. And if want something more intense, talk to your derm about in-office microdermabrasion or laser treatments. However crucial it is to take care of your peau during exfoliation, what you do after is just as important, so be sure to reach for that moisturizer and sunscreen, since exfoliation can increase your skin's sensitivity to UV rays.
