Within the past month, we've seen everything from a blizzard to 65-degree weather hit the East coast of the United States. In this sort of not-quite-winter-but-definitely-not-spring time of year, it's sometimes super tricky to figure out what to wear every morning. Here, we're sharing five essential styling tips to bundle up without getting overheated, feel breezy without getting goosebumps, and how to look cute no matter what.

  1. Invest in a variety of outerwear
We basically live in sweaters and jeans during the winter, so when it comes to tailoring our outfit to the weather, having a variety of outerwear is key. There will be days when it feels like the Arctic outside, which in that case, puffer jackets and heavy wool will be a necessity. However, if it's still cold out (but not *that* cold), opt for a trench, bomber, leather, or even denim jacket will do the trick.

  2. Layer, layer, layer
Have a toasty office but it's subzero outside? Cardigans, lightweight sweaters, blouses and tees are your new best friends. Wear a light inner layer closest to your body, but bulk up on a soft crew neck or chunky cardigan that you can remove once you get to your desk.

  3. Show some leg — but stay warm — with tights
Just because it's cold out doesn't mean you have to retire your cute mini dresses and skirts to the back of your closet! Opaque black tights are a great way to keep warm while showing some leg, and if the weather permits, you can ditch the tights midday if you're too warm. Plus, sheer or patterned tights are the perfect solution for days where bare legs are almost an option, but not quite.

  4. When in doubt, accessorize
Scarves, hats and gloves are essential pieces to staying warm outside, but if the sun randomly decides to show, or you're hit with a patch of warm weather, they're beyond easy to stow away in a tote or purse. Basically, they can be there when you need them, and gone when you don't.

  5. Color is key
While this aspect of dressing won't affect your body temperature, it's no doubt an influence on your mood. During the winter, feel free to explore darker, jewel tones like navy, emerald, and burgundy (and black too, obviously) even if you live in bright, happy colors during the summer. It'll help you "feel" more in-tune with the season, and give you a nice sartorial change of pace.
